In 2022 while I was running for special election as council person at large for the libertarian party I came across the story of a school teacher by the name of Meredith who had recently lost her son in a violent hate crime. I was moved to create a letter to her from Philadelphia as I heard her cries in the news about her circumstance.
I created a piece of art from a photograph I saw of her and her son and this poem.
I was inspired to create it by her story yet it is for all mothers who feel the system has failed them, the institutions that educate them has failed them, the extracurricular activities that you place them in has failed them, essentially The village failing them when results of tragic violence touch loving kind and nonviolent individuals. Then you realize the system has failed them.
This poem strives to be a Band-Aid of sorts a soothing ointment if only for momentary relief. I give you this piece...
Healing Verse Germantown Submission:
Poem For Grieving Mother
By Dr Poetica Natema Bey
No mother should bury her son
No innocent bystander should look down the barrel of a gun
Some public officials are more deadly than the Corona virus
Open up an iris for dialogue
He didn't mean to reach out to you because they never meant too
So I hope you can take these heartfelt words over an instrumental
It can't replace him
It wasn't meant to
Just a warm hand on your back and tip of the hat to let you know it ain't what we're all into
Someone to change the mainframe to reboot up in hopes to infuse those with heroism to suit up
The bat emblem is over Gotham City, time to recruit up Those that can re-elect the former select of he's not mine but I'll look out for him if I have too
Shame him if I have too
Provide for him a ride, or buy a cup of soup if I should
it's good to be great and Grand to get better
With this brotherly love and sisterly affection
Through this inclement weather
This ain't all I have to say along the lines of things getting better
This can't fully shield the pain yet possibly a sweater or umbrella through the rain
May you heal by the time the tears dry
Seal this on the side of support
And know it will improve
Only time will soothe
Place this poem on your heart whenever you miss him
Please forgive us
Sincerely
Philadelphia
